Setting Internals Like A Pro: Complete Guide To Internal Setting Tools
From exploring the different tool combinations, tool attributes to budget, use our comprehensive guide to choose the best tool range to fit your internal finishing system.
Selecting the right tool for your job
1. Choose your flow
1. Choose your flow
The first step is to choose the tool to apply the mud into the internal. There are three options here:
1. Compound Tube: most commonly used tool holds the most mud within the options. It is available in CanAm, Columbia and Tapepro.
2. MudShot: this innovative tool comes in two sizes. It is semi-assisted with a gas pressurised system for easier application, eliminating the stress of manually pushing the compound out. It has a clear head for visual inspection of compound level. Exclusive to the Level5 brand.
3. Throttle box: or also known as Corner box. Operates similarly to a setting box. It holds the least amount of compound out of the three options, requiring more frequent filling but making it lighter to use. It can also accommodate an extendable handle for better reach, making it ideal for high ceilings or a square set finish.
2. Glazers (Flushers) vs Finishers (Angle Heads)
2. Glazers (Flushers) vs Finishers (Angle Heads)
Another decision you will need to make is choosing between semi-automated Glazers vs automatic Finishers.
Glazers: most cost efficient and simpler to use. It requires minimum maintenance but need to be replaced once worn out. Glazers can be used for the first and finishing coats in your internals.
Finishers: usually more expensive, more durable with spare sparts available for durability. It can only be used for the finishing coat in your internals. The advantage of using the finisher for the finishing coat is that it would make a one-step process for increased productivity and you wouldn't need to interchange the applicator head and glazer to complete the process.
3. Height requirements
3. Height requirements
Another important consideration for choosing your internal tool system is the height requirements in your most common jobs.
Compound tubes are best used in your everyday - 2.4m to 2.7m heights
MudShot comes in a longer handle version for higher reach. it is ideal for rake ceilings and 3m + ceiling heights.
Throttle Box fits the Columbia Universal handle giving you a range of heights from 900mm to 1.5m. Ideal for all uses with great versability in one tool.
4. Return on investment
4. Return on investment
When buying internal finishing tools, you are not just investing in the tool, you are investing in yourself!
Time is Money - any finishing tool will pay for itself if you are mainly doing Square Set, but certainly all jobs have internals to set. Therefore, regardless of the tool you choose you will save time in completing your job.
Most tools within the category offer assistance to make the job easier and less straining on the body with a range of wheels in Applicator Heads and Glazers/Finishers for easier glide, and mechanical assistance in compound applicator for less resistance when pushing the mud out.
Brand name pays off in this category. Brands like CanAm are well-known for their design, performance and durability. Although it may have a higher upfront cost, it is a long-term investing.
